Ron and Gwen Pears Oral History

BiographyRon Pears was born on 3 July 1932. Gwen Pears (nee Gilchrist) was born on 19 September 1934. After Ron met Gwen playing tennis, rivalry on the court turned to romance off the court and after an initial 'stop-start' relationship the couple were married on 12 May 1956. In the early 1960s they moved to Girrilang Road Cronulla to live, building a house on sandhill land Gwen's grandfather had owned.SynopsisRon and Gwen Pears have been involved in Elouera Surf Life Saving Club since it began in 1967. In reflecting on the history of the Club, Ron notes the initial involvement of the Police Citizens Boys' Club and the vital role of sponsorship by organisations such as Otis Escalators, Breens and the Sutherland District Trade Union Club at Gymea. He discusses Surf Awareness clinics, the importance of Nippers and the work of the Nipper parents in helping create a 'family club'. He is proud of the fact that Elouera SLSC was one of the first 'to embrace females as club members'. The physical reorganisation of the clubhouse in 2000(?) necessary to allow Summer Salt Restaurant to lease a large portion of the club hall is also explained.
