Val and Doug Nicholson Oral History

BiographyVal Paton was born on 22 December 1939 and grew up in Sutherland. Doug Nicholson was born on 3 November 1938. They were married in 1968 and lived in Bonnet Bay since 1975.SynopsisVal Nicholson has a family history going back three generations in Sutherland Shire. Her grandfather Robert (Bob) William Cook, a pioneer of the Woronora River, was a member of the first Sutherland Shire Council, whose family first came to the area as railway workers. Val grew up in Sutherland, living in shop premises in East Parade and later in Robertson Street. After Doug (born: 3 November 1938) and Val's marriage in 1968 they bought land in Bonnet Bay. The house was completed in July 1975 and they have lived there ever since. Val had an interest in musical theatre and was a foundation member when Miranda Musical Society was formed in 1967. Val and Doug witnessed the dramatic fires of January 1994 and painted a vivid picture of this time of 'high tension for about 72 hours.' Although they escaped unscathed they will never forget the noise, heat and horror of those summer days.
