Collection SummaryEdward Hyndman was Shire president from 1911-1915 and had an important role in the establishment of the Miranda School of Arts.BiographyEdward Hyndman was born in Brighton New Zealand in 1871. He arrived in Australia before 1903. Attracted to the Sutherland district Hyndman took up land offered by leasehold by the Holt Sutherland Estate Land Company. The land he selected was in the Miranda area. He and his wife Martha established a poultry farm. Interested in the local community Hyndman ran for Sutherland Shire Council in the 1911 elections and was elected Shire president from 1911-1915. He also had an important role in the establishment of the Miranda School of Arts taking on the role of president. After leaving local government in 1915 by 1927 Edward managed the Cecil Apartments, a boarding house at Cronulla and also the Cecil Hotel facing Cronulla Beach and owned by Joe Monro. By 1937 he moved out of the Shire but due to poor health later died the same year at the age of 66.
