Collection SummaryThe Pass of Sabugal is located on the Woronora River. HistoryThe Old Illawarra Road including the Pass of Sabugal is a listed heritage item. Major Thomas Mitchell surveyed the route in 1843. The Old Illawarra Road crossed the Woronora River at a natural rock ford that Mitchell named the Pass of Sabugal in memory of a small town in east Portugal. Construction was undertaken by a road gang including convict labour. It appears a thin layer of concrete was applied to the casueway around 1960 to improve access for fire fighting equipment. The causeway was modified in 2008 to improve fish passage and enhance aquatic habitat along the river.
