Collection SummaryWilliam Judd was elected to the first council of 1907.BiographyWilliam Judd was born in 1847 in Sydney the son of John and Selina Judd. He married Eleanor Howard on 15 February 1869 and had four children. As the first Shire President (1906 – 1910) William Judd brought with him an extensive knowledge of local and state government. Prior to William’s appointment to Sutherland Shire Council, he served as both Alderman and Mayor of Rockdale Council and was the Member for Canterbury from 1885 to 1887.
Early in his career William founded the Judd’s Brickworks at Mortdale, and was also a store keeper at St Peters. His interests turned to the Shire when he purchased a weekender at Yowie Bay. As the first Sutherland Shire President, William was at the helm when council took over the maintenance of roads and bridges and when it created the first garbage and sanitation services. It was also under William that council began to advertise the Shire as a new residential estate.
He died at the age of 82 at his home "Athelstane" located at Wollongong Road Arncliffe on 6 December 1929. He was buried at Woronora Cemetery.
