Collection SummaryDavid Albone was best known for establishing the Lugarno Pleasure Grounds on the Georges River.BiographyDavid Albone purchased land on the Menai side of the Georges River in 1906. It had been part of the estate purchased by William Golden in 1887.
A carpenter by trade, Albone built a weatherboard cottage which sat on the top of a ridge. He established the Lugarno Pleasure Grounds which offered a number of charming summer houses for guests and visitors to enjoy. A dance-hall was attached to the house. A store was opened where confectionery, drinks, hot and cold water were available.
Visitors were ferried from Como by a launch service also run by the Albone family. Menai residents would walk or drive their horse-drawn vehicles to the Albone residence where they would take the launch to Como Railway Station before the opening of the Woronora Bridge in 1912.
Sadly, in 1967, both the house and the hall were destroyed by fire. David Albone died in 1947, aged 74.
