Cronulla Park

Collection SummaryCronulla Park is located in the suburb of Cronulla.HistoryIn 1895 the Cronulla Peninsula was subdivided. Six acres on the ocean front was reserved for public recreation and was referred to as Surf Park. Around 1924 this popular name was replaced by and became known as Cronulla Park.
Amenity such as seats and shelter sheds as well as fencing were established in the park from around 1907. In the early days the park came alive with music on Sundays and public holidays when bands played in a band stand pavilion.
From the late 1910s to the 1920s the park was planted with Norfolk Island Pines, Hoop Pines and Canary Island Date Palms. In 1921 to 1922 Cronulla Park was redeveloped with new paths and terracing. At about the same time vehicles were banned from driving ad parking in the Park.

The Park was also the site for the official switching on of electricity to the Cronulla area on 8th August 1917.

In 1922 a German gun was placed in Cronulla Park as a war trophy where it remained until around 1948.

The Park was also used as a site for other memorials over the years such as a trachyte seat dedicated to local chemist Ernest George Vincent in 1952 a bronze plaque commemorating the opening of the Cronulla Sewerage Scheme in 1956 and a wishing well to honour local butcher Billy Mac which was officially opened in 1958.

By the 1960s an elevated bowling green had been erected which extended into the southern boundary and sand had begun to encroach into the park.

By the 1990s a semi-circular pathway and grassed area was in place near the beachfront as well as the playground at the northern end of the park.
