Moombara House, Port Hacking

Collection SummaryMoombara House located at 17-19 Moombara Crescent, Port HackingHistoryMoombara House is one of the oldest buildings in Port Hacking (also known as Lilli Pilli) and one of a number of weekenders that were built in the area by wealthy Sydney citizens.

The house was built by Richard Cornelius Critchett Walker, a long serving public servant of the N.S.W. government, in the 1880s. The land was leased from the Holt-Sutherland Company Pty Ltd. The original house was a Federation bungalow style residence with the ground floor and basement constructed from locally quarried sandstone. A timber first storey was added in the early 1900s. The house has a local heritage listing displayed on the State Heritage register website.

In 1903 the property was purchased by Arthur Allen, a prominent Sydney solicitor with the law firm Allen, Allen and Helmsley. Moombara was a holiday home for the Allen family from the early 1900s to the 1940s. Margaret Gifford, the daughter of Arthur Allen, details recollections of her childhood holidays at Moombara in her book “I can hear the horses”. Many visiting dignitaries and celebrities were entertained here including members of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the English cricket team. It was a honeymoon destination for many friends and acquaintances of the Allen family. The property has had many changes of ownership over the years and was listed for sale in 2024.
