By: Stephen Gard19th Sep 2026 5:20PMWhy would the locomotive be 'pushing' the train? It was a downhill grade to the old Como Bridge. The locomotive is in fact pulling the train up the hill, towards Oatley. It is clearly running on the 'Up' line, meaning towards the city, passing through Oatley to the Sydney terminal. This loco may be making a short run to 'rescue' some carriages from a train whose locomotive has failed. That is why it is running 'coal bunker up'; it may not have been near a turntable when called to assist. This is a suburban side-tank locomotive, originally the S.636 Class, (hence the number '645' shown in the tender) later the C30 Class, and well known as an Illawarra work-horse. There are no stanchions for overhead electrification, so this is pre 1926.
