Florence Bullman Oral History

BiographyFlorence Bullman, nee Stockman, was born 1907. Her parents were Paul William Stockman and Lillian Prudence.SynopsisFlorence Bullman talks about her family and the early years on the Woronora River. The family had lived in Stanmore and Carlton father was a music teacher. In 1913 he applied to Holt Sutherland and took up a lease of 15 acres on the Woronora River, with 11 acres in her mother's name. They built a home with shop attached - mixed business, to serve tourists, holiday makers and week-enders - moved in and shop opened Easter 1914. At that time they were farthest house up the river and there were no permanent residents, just week-enders. They would walk to Sutherland along a track for shop supplies they had a motor launch - supplies delivered to Como Goods and loaded on government wharf at Como. Florence attended Sutherland Public school from age 8, walking alone to Sutherland until brother Jim old enough. She recalls the early boatsheds: Tom Price's opposite Prince Edward Park, the Anderson's, the Cook family's later owned by Schofields Forbes Creek was called Brown's Creek Mr Preen worked for W.D. & H.O. Wills a wealthy man named Andrews had a place on the river, his friend Amies bought the whole of the Prices Estate just after World War 1 and put in a road that joined the road to Menai on the west side of the bridge. About 1918 two Polish Jews, David and Leo Shackle, took up the Crown land opposite Stockman's and divided it into farmlets, 'Shackles Estate' - Florence's mother was paid five pounds for every block she sold for them as the Depression worsened, people came to live in cottages on the estate. Florence recalls owners of week-enders and residents: Osborne family from Surry Hills Mr and Mrs Kirby and sons Bill, Joe and Jim Prices Smallwoods Johnson's Kelly's Hull's Love's - her daughter Heather was headmistress of Jannali Primary circa 1969/72. She recalls fishing wildlife (wallabies, native cat, snakes) wildflowers floods bushfires Christmas mother walking to Sutherland then travelling by train for birth of her brother Jim, rowing to Schofields for birth of her sister no doctors in Sut
