BiographyLaurie Moxey was born 1924, at Miranda. His parents were Esmond Moxey and Isabel Moxey (nee Dawson).SynopsisLaurie Moxey talks about his family and the early years at Miranda. His parents and uncle Arthur Moxey had poultry farms on President Avenue. Includes description of poultry farming of the time, the 'colony system' - used separate fowl houses and rotating yards later an intensive system was introduced with hundreds of birds in one shed - prior to the more commercialised cage system. Miranda Co-operative Society was main supplier of fowl feed with a special siding on the Sutherland Cronulla Railway. Eggs taken to the Egg Marketing Board, carrier collected twice per week - Atkins, an old established family in Miranda. Recalls methods of dealing with heat stress with well water disease problems breeds of poultry kept. When Laurie married he left the poultry farm, bought another property on President Avenue towards Sylvania Road and started a market garden. After four years he sold to a developer and moved to an orchard at Darkes Forest. Laurie recalls attending Miranda school during the Depression then to Sutherland Intermediate High which he left at age 14 contracting tetanus which was treated at St George Cottage Hospital attending the Methodist Church on Kiora Road. Includes the shops at Miranda - grocers Frasers and Penprases, Miranda Post Office incorporated in Penprases shop fruit shop on The Kingsway Downey's paper shop Billy Mac the butchers real estate office of F.R. Shaw shale pit where Miranda Fair was built School of Arts had a library and was used for church fairs, dances and concerts travelling to Cronulla on the Bardsley's buses Sunday school picnics at Gunnamatta Park Cronulla Beach electric railway built 1939. Laurie recalls neighbours Fletchers and Lovedays fishing at Yowie Bay next to Quinlan's boatshed vet Sleaman gypsies camping near Mondels on The Kingsway an Aboriginal family lived in Kiora Road policeman named Packett lived in Urunga Parade processions from Miranda to Yowie Bay the first air raid alert during World War 2.
