BiographyMay Frater, nee Coulthard, was born 1917, at Como. Her parents were George Coulthard and Edith Coulthard (nee Pattinson). She married Gordon Fergus Bruce Frater in 1941.SynopsisMay Frater talks primarily about her family and the early years in Como. Includes birth parents and siblings father was a carpenter and one of the 2 men from Como who enlisted in World War 1 her mother's grandfather Pattinson was original founder of Soul Pattinson Chemist May's maternal grandmother Sarah Jane Pattinson was a midwife and worked with Nurse Lobb. May attended Como School which commenced in 1921 with one classroom christened, confirmed and married at St John's Church of England Sutherland she did not attend high school first job was a case factory near Central Station, then Alex Cowan's Stationers. Includes local identities: families who attended the school reunion the Tickners, Larkins, Dugans, Leitners, Halls, Rollings baker Jack Batty made deliveries Rollings ran the dairy old George Head gave the girls lollies Henderson's were an old family kiosk at Como Pleasure Grounds run by George Rollings Wheeler ran the newsagency dancing friends were Tommy Dawson, the Sullivans, Hylton Bennett, Dicky Davis, Billy Griffin visited Mrs Bell at Oyster Bay - Mr Lissamin drove horse and carriage from Como Station to Oyster Bay, later Mr Dearman ran an open car 2/6d per week. Entertainments included church outings to National Park races tram to Cronulla and Gunnamatta Bay for swimming swimming in Careena Bay opposite the family home mother played the piano and sang dances in the log hall School of Arts at Como Rollings had a boat called 'Iris' with a piano and parties would go to East Hills and the locals would play cricket with a Newtown team, the Hummers, Bert Oldfield was Newtown wicket keeper going dancing at Oatley and Mortdale by train and to School of Arts Sutherland and Boyle's Hall Como Hotel.
