BiographyWilliam Mondel was born 1910. His parents were Joseph Mondel and Cecelia Mondel (nee Talbot), of Miranda. He did not marry.SynopsisWilliam (Bill) Mondel talks primarily about his family and the early years in Miranda. Bill recollects the early days of the Sutherland Shire, when the Mondels were one of very few German families living there during WWI.Includes grandparents Jacob? and Elizabeth Veronica Mondel (nee Immelheinz) had a vineyard, poultry farm and orchard on 12 acres in Kingsway grandfather worked on Macarthur estate grandmother made wine family migrated to Australia in 1880's (or 1872) grandmother's recollections of Franco-Prussian war maternal grandparents Talbots death of Bill's sisters. Population in Shire when Bill was a boy predominantly English and Scottish descent 3 German names Mondel, Schell and Burgess in the central part of the Shire north German called Harry Hinte was a guard on the trams. Bill at school during World War 1, but remembers the day war broke out when he was aged about 4. Attended Miranda school, then Hurstville Technical School until 2nd year. Family moved to Parraweena Road when he was aged about 11. Includes working in his father's garden the Depression going to technical college at night job in the botany department of East Sydney Tech looking after glasshouses painting was his hobby - studied drawing and design and exhibited paintings at Easter Show. Includes local identities Dr Sproule, Dr Broom and Dr Miller Black George Andy Larsen, a Norwegian who worked with Billy Mac (William McDonald) mother bought groceries from Billy Nelson at Caringbah Mrs Guy.
