His father was a master butcher from the inner city and he established a butchers shop in Sutherland in the 1900s. He served in World War One and and after a number of other became a butcher like his father. He opened a shop in Como in Genoa Street next to what was once the Woronora Hotel which had served the local population when the railway line south was being constructed. In 1929 Dawes moved the shop a short distance away in Cremona Road also in Como. He married local girl Rita Rollings. Dawes was a master butcher for 58 years when he retired in 1988 and his son Ted took over. Cary's butcher shop and the Como Hotel have been become icons of the Como area and well known to all.
