Little is known of his early life but he learned carpentry as a trade before he immigrated to Australia in about 1875. He married Mary Tancred in 1883. They lived in Balmain for a time after their marriage which was Mary's home town. While there the couple had 4 children. In 1893 the family moved to the suburb of Sutherland. Samuel built a house for his growing family. His son Ralph took up carpentry and later established a joinery on Toronto Parade at Sutherland . Samuel died in 1926.
