HistoryThis suburb was originally part of Lucas Heights. It was decided to change the rename this selection to Barden Ridge in 1992. Part of the land included was originally selected by John Lucas in 1825. The rest of the land were crown land grants primarily taken up for the purpose of mining. One of these allotments was made by Cooks River butcher Frederick Barden. His brother Alfred Barden was an associate of John Lucas and also held land in Bottle Forest which became Heathcote East. He was known to travel along the Old Illawarra Road from his allotment in Bottle Forest to the Menai area. The Barden property was acquired by the Shackel family in 1917 an was subdivided to form Bardens Hill Farmlets. Barden Ridge faces the Woronora River including the Needles a rock formation on part of the river near the Pass of Sabugal. A sporting complex known at The Ridge is also located in this suburb.
