HistoryThe name Burraneer is probably taken from the waterway Burraneer Bay which was named by Surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827. Most of the land was originally purchased by James Wilson in 1862. This land was later sold to Thomas Holt in 1865. The rest of what is now the suburb had been bought by Andrew and Mary Webster in 1858. It was later sold to Dominick Dolan in 1865. Burraneer occupies the peninsula on the waterway Port Hacking and includes the inlet Donans Bay. In 1912 local settler Nat Bull had a property which was later subdivided. Scattered development in the 1920s and 1930s was followed by a post war building boom.
