Caringbah
Main
HistoryThis suburb was originally known as Highfield. The name was later changed to Caringbah when a postal service was established after 1914. Part of the land which is now the suburb of Caringbah is located mainly on the eastern half of a 1000 acre grant made to John Connell in 1816. The area was once also part of the estate of local pioneer Thomas Holt who acquired land in the 1860s which later became what is now known as Sutherland Shire. Some of the oldest roads run through this suburb which include Port Hacking, Burraneer Bay and Cawarra Roads. A tramway which ran from 1911 to 1931 ran along Kingsway to Cronulla through what would become large areas of residential settlement after World War Two. Caringbah was the first suburb to have a department store established by the McDowells in the early 60s. The retail area of Caringbah was well known and used until Miranda Fair opened.
