Gymea Bay
Main
HistoryThe area known as Gymea Bay refers to that area which fronts Port Hacking and as far north as Forest Road. Early pioneer Thomas Holt purchased this land and it was included in the Holt Sutherland Estate. The area has been referred to as a fisherman's paradise because it was originally frequented by recreational fishermen and weekenders. In 1921 Rosetta Jarvis moved to the area with her husband who had served in World War One and was wounded at Gallipoli. She was responsible for establishing a farm and general store which also served as a post office on Gymea Bay Road. Waterfront land at Gymea Bay was not subdivided until the 1920s. In 1928 residents requested swimming baths to be established on Gymea Bay which were officially opened in 1931. As Gymea Bay developed community facilities were established. This included the School of Arts and later a public school and sporting oval. Although Gymea Bay is now largely residential it continues to be a popular site for water activities.
