HistoryThe first development in Illawong was in the 1880s when its remote location made it a popular area for holiday homes such as Cranbrook and Waitara which could be reached by boat from Como. Even in the 1940s the area was remote enough to attract local children's author John Sinclair known as John Mystery who wrote from his Shire address referred to as Adventure Castle. The area was once known locally as East Menai or Bottle and Glass Point however in 1960 when a new public school was being built it was proposed that the school name be Illawong and at the same time it was agreed to use this name for the suburb as well which was officially approved in 1961. There was further residential development particularly in the 1980s when subdivisions were released.
