HistorySandy Point is one of the Sutherland Shire's most remote suburbs. Located in the far west of the area Sandy Point is surrounded by bush and is bounded on one side by the Georges River. It was first sighted by Europeans when Matthew Flinders with George Bass in 1795 explored the river starting from Botany Bay. The Georges River was very early a focus for pleasure boats cruising along the foreshores stopping at pleasure grounds established in the Edwardian period. Tourists could visit by travelling on the paddle steamer "Telephone" visiting Lambeth Park which was established opposite what would become Sandy Point. Land was granted to various individuals before finally being subdivided in 1925 and offered for sale as Sandy Point Estate. The area however was slow to develop because there was no road access and approaches could only be made by boat. In 1942 the Heathcote Road was formed as a military road and as a result opportunity for residential development improved. Families were still faced with no services or shops. However in 1951 there were enough residents to form a progress association who took as their motto "at home with nature". By 1962 a water supply was turned on and a community hall was built by 1986.
