Sylvania
Main
HistoryJohn Connell was the first land grantee of Sylvania. He used the land primarily for his business ventures which included pasturing stock which he corralled at Horse Rock Point. From this place on the Georges River he could ferry the stock to the other side and then to a Sydney market. The land was left to family member John Connell Laycock but was later acquired by Thomas Holt who established his Sutherland Estate in the 1860s. It included most of what is currently known as the Sutherland Shire. The area which became Sylvania was the location in which Holt built a mansion which he called Sutherland House. Although he did not live there for any length of time it did become the home of one of his children Frederick and his family. This family formed the nucleus of the new settlement. Holt later leased most of his estate to the Holt Sutherland Estate Land Company who set about creating estates for residential settlement reserving the site of Sutherland House and surrounding acreage for the Holt family. The first land to be released was in the Sylvania area in 1882. A post office was opened in 1883 and a few shops were located on the main road, Princes Highway. The area has been called the "gateway to the south" due to the construction of the road which was to serve primarily as a route to the south coast. One of the first settlers were the Rice family. Various punts and ferry services were used to cross the Georges River until the Georges River bridge was opened in 1929. Pioneer families were mostly orchardists or market gardeners. it was also the place where may restaurants and nightclubs flourished from the 1920s and into the 1950s. Such places as Oyster Bills and Herman's Haystack were very popular venues attracting diners and patrons from as far as the city. More recently it has been popular for Paul's hamburgers. A shopping complex called Southgate was opened in 1983 which includes access to a public branch library and tenpin bowling lanes. The Georges River bridge was duplicated in 1987.
