Collection SummaryGordon first moved to the Shire when he helped Brian McDowell set up McDowells, Caringbah in 1961. The store was taken over by Waltons in 1972. Lorraine spent most of her childhood in Caringbah and Miranda, and has vivid memories of both districts as they were from the mid-1950s. She has worked in Caringbah most of her life and knew a succession of business owners in the shopping centre.BiographyGordon Stone was born in Byron Bay in 1930 and lived in Wollongong from 1941. He worked in fashion/department stores in Australia and the USA before moving to Caringbah when McDowells opened in 1961.

Lorraine Quinlin was born in Lithgow in May 1946. Her parents bought land in Miranda in 1954 and built a home. As a child she attended Miranda Public School and Port Hacking High School in its opening year in 1959. She joined McDowells in 1963 as house model and cosmetics sales girl, where she met Gordon and they were married in 1964.
