William Ainsworth

Collection SummaryWilliam Ainsworth served on Sutherland Shire Council and had interests in both Engadine and Cronulla. BiographyWilliam Ainsworth was born in Richmond in 1861. He was a resident of the Leichhardt area but spent the summer months in holiday homes he built in Engadine and Cronulla. He married in 1886 at the age of 21 to Helena Stewart. They lived at 32 Norton Street Leichhardt and had five children.
His occupation was in real estate, but Ainsworth also spent much time in public life as an alderman and mayor for Leichhardt Council. With this vast experience it is not surprising that he also went on to serve on Sutherland Shire Council as both a councillor and president.
He was responsible for helping to establish the St George County Council primarily for the delegated function to supply electricity and assisting with investigations into the building of the Georges River Bridge.
He died on 12 January 1921 at age 60 and was interred at Woronora Cemetery.
