Collection SummaryFrederick Adrian Dwyer was the first employee of Sutherland Shire Council who undertook maintenance of the area.BiographyFrederick Dwyer was born in Appin, New South Wales and was the son of a farmer. He was living in Sutherland when the Sutherland Shire was incorporated in 1906 and the first Council met in 1907. He was appointed in 1907 as a maintenance man. By 1914 Dwyer was working as the Shire overseer.
He was married to Mary Ann Minnie and was raising what would become a very large family in a house located in Oxford Street on the western side of the railway line.
Until 1922 Dwyer attended his work using a horse and cart. The Council bought its first car in 1922. He retired in 1929 due to ill health having served for 22 years.
Even though he had no formal training, Frederick Dwyer was held in such high regard for his work as a local road builder that on his death, aged 67 in 1929, councillors and council staff joined a funeral procession from the family home to Woronora Cemetery where he was laid to rest.
